In this webinar designed specifically for Headteachers and Senior Leaders, presenters Ian Hunkin and Julia Steward will give an overview of the professional obligation leaders maintain for their own wellbeing in order to effectively lead inclusive schools. Through the session, Ian will present an overview of the evidence from research on the impact of stress on wellbeing, while Julia will explore strategies for sustaining resilience for leadership, with a particular focus on health and wellbeing.

Thursday 16th July 2020 - 12 noon to 1.30 pm  

Lisa Pollard (Boolean Maths Lead) and Clare Christie (SLE and Lead Practitioner, Ashley Down Primary School) are offering a briefing with a chance for questions, leading to discussion, to system leaders in the South West.  

Places are limited.   

Prior to joining, those attending should familiarise themselves with the guidance document and its supporting videos; and consider questions so that the potential of this document can be discussed.  

This is particularly aimed at those involved in system leadership.

Secondary Maths Teacher Subject Specialism Training TSST Online Course

Teacher Subject Specialism Training (TSST) have successfully set up, in agreement with the DfE, an online TSST course to enable non-specialists to become Secondary Maths teachers.  This is the first of its type in the country and is available only in the Southwest of England at present, and is in response to the current circumstances schools are facing.

Its features are:

  1. This one-off course will comprise 30 hours live online training, and will be available even during school closure periods
  2. The programme is entirely free and is designed to be delivered when teachers are not teaching – so no cover costs
  3. Successful applicants will have their TRNs adapted to reflect their new status as Maths teachers
  4. The course will be delivered by experts such as Teaching For Mastery Specialists or SLEs
  • Teachers who successfully complete the course will qualify for a £200 bursary for their school – for each participant

Ambition Institute is partnering with Teaching Schools South West to deliver Curriculum Specialists, an evidence-informed programme helping middle leaders to improve pupil outcomes through quality teaching. It will support them to create an ambitious curriculum across their subject or specialist area and make sure it’s successfully implemented, monitored and measured.

This programme is designed to develop the knowledge and associated skills that, through research, we have identified as being central to middle leaders responsible for subject curriculum. With this knowledge, participants will develop the expertise to meaningfully tackle the challenges they commonly face in their role. It will support them to create an ambitious curriculum across their subject or specialist area and make sure it’s successfully implemented, monitored and measured.

Secondary Early Career Framework for NQT

Teach First, in partnership with TSSW, is offering all Secondary NQTs the opportunity to take up the Teach First ‘Early Career Framework’ Programme in 2020-2021.

 

The main features of the offer are:
  1. Premium quality programme: Teach First is a leading national training provider which has developed a premium ECF programme for NQTs and NQT+1 through a team of leading expert national advisers 

  2. Blended learning approach: The programme combines self-directed study through a state-of-the-art learning platform, group seminars and instructional coaching with the in-school Mentor; the approach is not reliant on NQTs going off-site, which in the COVID-19 recovery phase will maximise time spent in lessons. \

  3. Builds high impact mentoring: NQT mentor will receive training and support to hone instructional coaching skills. Mentors will have full access to the ECF learning platform, so they can track and support NQT progress.

  4. Free programme with unlimited places: the DfE are rolling out early the ECF in response to COVID 19 to strengthen support for NQTs who would have had a shortened teacher training year. All aspects of training for NQTs and Mentors are free. Cover costs and travel expenses will also be significantly reduced. 

  5. Combining strong local expertise: TSSW will play a key partnership role in delivery, building on the excellent TSSW ECF programme delivered by John Stanier this year. Early career leads from TSSW will be trained to deliver aspects of the Teach First programme, including the webinars for NQTs and Mentors and as well as Mentor Group Sessions. This enables us to combine strong local expertise with a premium national programme.

One Year Early Careers/NQT Programme

Devon Teaching School and Ambition Institute have formed a partnership to provide all the benefits of the Early Career Framework online training together with the DTSP’s outstanding personalised face-to-face NQT programme.

Ambition Institute are one of the four DfE licensed pilot organisations delivering the Early Career Framework. Due to the particular needs of this cohort of NQTs the DfE have agreed to widen the pilot to work with other delivery partners. This means that this programme will receive the full first year of the ECF programme which is fully funded by the DfE. DTSP will provide seven face to face sessions across the year to extend and develop this programme. This will include peer and school visits to observe high quality teaching and learning to help mitigate their missed final Teaching Practice and complement their in school support. NQTs will still be fully qualified at the end of their first year. There will then be an option to continue on into the second year of ECF.

Ahead of the launch of next year's implementation of Early Careers Framework, ECTSW have established a successful programme of RQT hubs for teachers in early stages of their teaching career.  ECTSW aims to support RQTs in the further development of their teaching practice and retain the very best practitioners within our profession.  This course has been specifically designed to support both new RQTs who have experienced disruption in their NQT year due to COVID-19 and more experienced RQTs looking to take the next steps in their career.

NQT Programme 2020-2021 Now in its seventh successful year, Wimborne, Linwood and Ambitions teaching schools are in collaboration to deliver an NQT programme for 2020/21. The course is carefully tailored to provide supportive, specialised and developmental training led by a range of experienced trainers, SLEs, LLEs and NLEs. There are many bespoke elements of the course, such as career development workshops, which allow individual NQTs to make decisions about the training they receive. The Programme also includes support for NQTs and Mentors. Wimborne Teaching School is an initiative led by two outstanding schools in Wimborne: Allenbourn Middle School and St John's CE First School. What exactly is Attachment Theory?  What does a child with strong attachment look like?  What are the consequences for school staff who support children with weak attachments and where their relationships with key adults have been fractured?

 

This important training will be split into 3 sessions:

 

Session One :  The Theory of Attachment – to understand the theoretical origins of attachment theory and to briefly introduce the four main attachment styles

 

Session Two:  The Impact of Adversity on Attachment – to highlight the importance of early relationships and brain development

 

Session Three:  Attachment in Schools – to consider the relevance of attachment theory on children’s learning, behaviour and relationships in school and to consider the importance of a secure base and how this is achieved within your organisation.

 

The training via Zoom is delivered by experienced staff from The Mulberry Bush School in Oxfordshire, an Outstanding Special School and Children’s home providing specialist therapeutic care, treatment and education for traumatised children aged 5-13 and their families from across England and Wales.  It is designed for anyone working with children, young people and their parents/carers.

 

The training itself will be delivered in two hour slots, every two weeks between 13:00-15:00 and the dates are:

 

Session One :  Tuesday  15 September 2020

Session Two:   Tuesday 29 September 2020

Session Three: Tuesday 13 October 2020

 

 

Cost £85 for SWALSS members and £100 for non-members (for all 3 sessions in total)
