Specialist Finance Training and Support for System Leaders Sub Regions C & D

School Resource Management

Where a school is not in receipt of support via ESFA, the NLE is expected to indicate whether the school has undertaken a review of their resource management, including curriculum and financial planning, in the last 12 months.  If this review has not been done in the last 12 months, it must be conducted by the school during the three-day deployment via the SRM self-assessment and SRM checklist.   If, in this review, issues are identified relating to resource management then for Tier 2 schools the recommended actions must include undertaking a financial health-check via the DfE financial health checks. NLEs should also consider making the same recommendation for Tier 1 schools.

Failure to manage resources effectively in a school can seriously undermine efforts to improve outcomes.  A Financial Notice to Improve adds an enormous additional burden to an academy leadership team and the pressure of living with a deficit reduces scope for development for many years.  At the very least, weaknesses in resource management will be a distraction.  Furthermore, with most significant change taking several years to fully implement, a strategic financial plan, including an assessment of risk and uncertainty, underpins a school improvement journey.  An education-centred strategic financial plan will ensure educational and financial viability and success are intertwined.

This workshop will start with the key links between school resource management and school improvement and the role that integrated curriculum and financial planning has to play.  We will then explore the tools available to support school resource management, including the DfE dashboard and checklist and, through use of a case study, identify the top ten issues and what action could be recommended.

Coaching with Impact- Sub Region A

An effective coaching relationship can make the difference between approaching the challenges of headship with a measure of justified confidence, and stumbling through difficulties, fearing the future.  Coaching is a confidential process, which makes it difficult to know how effective we are as coaches.  The day will allow participants to practice skills and receive developmental feedback from  peers in a safe environment. The day is planned to meet the diverse needs of a group with a range of coaching experience and expertise, and is planned to give everyone the opportunity to learn from each other. However experienced you are as a coach, each coaching relationship is different, and everyone can benefit from development.
