To support the rapid shift to remote learning,  Doug Lemov author of Teach Like a Champion is researching and sharing how teachers are moving their instruction online. Doug is Managing Director of Uncommon Schools, a non-profit charter management organisation that manages 42 charter schools across New York, New Jersey and Boston.

'A rapid evidence summary of what is known about best practice in teaching when school students are educated by distance learning'

This report provides a rapid evidence summary of what is known about best practice in teaching when school students are educated by distance learning. It considers both theoretical concepts and empirical evidence relating to the effectiveness of teaching methods used in a distance learning context. The report includes a consideration of the grey literature about pedagogy produced in response to the current period of global school closures. There are limitations in the nature of the evidence base. Much of the research into remote pedagogy comes from a higher education context. Little attention has been devoted to remote pedagogy at primary school level. Research evidence from low-income and middle income countries is limited.

EdTech Demonstrator Programme

The EdTech Demonstrator programme will provide peer-led advice and training to help schools and colleges use technology to support remote teaching and improve their digital capability.  The reach of this programme will be expanded over the coming weeks, and schools and colleges can now register their interest in receiving support here:

Broadclyst Community Primary School (Cornerstone Academy Trust) has been selected as one of the schools that will be delivering the programme. BCPS, along with the other EdTech Demonstrators, will provide support and training to other schools in the region from this week and helping set up digital education platforms, which at this time of school closures will support schools in delivering home learning.  To view the press release, please click here.

Cornerstone Academy Trust will be running its first EdTech live event this Thursday (30 April) at 2.00pm on ‘Setting up a virtual school from scratch’.  The free webinar will offer training on how schools can set up and use resources most effectively to deliver remote teaching and can be booked at here.

Remote Schooling: New EEF Evidence Review

New EEF evidence review highlights core features that can unlock the potential of Remote Learning.
Pupils can learn through remote teaching, but there are some key steps to take to make sure it is as effective as possible.
This is according to a new review of the evidence on remote learning published by the Education Endowment Foundation (EEF) today as part of a package of resources to help schools to support their pupils, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds, during this period of closures.

Leading an international school community through the Covid 19 crisis: TSC SW speaks to an international school leader on managing extended school closures. 

Sonya Papps has led her school community through three extended school closure periods in Taipei this year. In this article, she shares her reflections and learning in the hope that other school principals in other parts of the world might benefit, as well as help prepare colleagues if the C-19 pandemic requires more prolonged school closure. The British Secondary and High School is part of Taipei European School and has over 600 secondary age international students on roll.
